Arctic Phenomena

Haven't you wondered what it would be like to live within the Arctic Circle?

I've heard that there is some weird stuff that goes on up there in the north....

People up there see things and hear things that most of us normally don't.  This is caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere.  The crystals change how light reflects and actually bends sound waves.  People claim to hear things at greater distances because the sound waves bend toward Earth instead of away from Earth.  It's possible you could hear a car start or an airplane engine starting up that is miles away from you.  If conditions are right regular conversations can be heard over a mile away!

This picture shows the ice crystals in the atmosphere making a colorful ring around the Sun.

There's also a phenomena called "Ice Blink and Water Sky".  Water sky is the dark underside of clouds hanging over a vast area of water.  Ice blink is the way light reflects off of a patch of ice in the ocean making the cloudy sky look bright.

Do you want to see what a "fog bow" is?

A fog bow is kind of like a rainbow and works the same way except there isn't rain in the sky, it's all water crystals reflecting light from the sun. Sometimes the atmosphere gets thick with crystals and fog bows can be seen.

Doesn't this make you want to move to the Arctic?
