How in the world are the new colonists on the moon going to eat? I know they can eat dried food...but for 6-12 months? Blah!
Luckily there are some hungry scientists just like me that have already got this planned! (Always a plan isn't there?) Some researchers from University of Arizona have designed a special greenhouse that looks like a long tube and will be buried under the Moon soil. It will have lamps to light the plants and a way to water them...
Special tanks of carbon dioxide will fill the tube, and special lights will shine on the plants. Scientists hope the plants will be growing by the time the first astronauts make it to the moon. They will have fresh veggies the moment they land! The plants will create oxygen that will be stored in other tanks and water created by the plants will be stored in another tank.
When the astronaut colonists get there they can then take the carbon dioxide they breath, store it in a tank and put it back in with the plants. Water can be extracted from their urine to water the plants...ummm, what!!
The University of Arizona scientists believe that this little tube system will produce 53 quarts of drinkable water, and a small amount of oxygen within one 24 hour period. The tube that holds the plants can be folded into a four foot wide disk in 10 minutes and easily transported through space or across the moon.
Of course...right? Read all about it:
I wouldn't want dry food.
