"Eartheans" look in the sky and see a beautiful full moon lighting up the sky. We "oo" and "aw", and wonder...
"How can such a beautiful object be called "Moon"?
Before Jupiter's moons were first observed in 1610 by Galileo, the English called our moon, "mona". Since there were more "moons" being seen, all of them couldn't be named "moon". So, astronomers began giving the other "moons" really flashy names like Io, Titan, Enceladus, Mimas...etc. We stuck with "moon". The Greeks called it "Selene", and those that spoke Latin called it "Luna". Both names refer to goddesses.
The first humans that cared to give "the moon" its name lived over 2,000 years ago. They didn't even suspect there were other "moons" out in space. They assumed our "moon", was the only "moon" in the universe.
I guess we could change the name of "the moon", but "Eartheans" have trouble with changing traditions...
For example:
Take away our turkey and Christmas presents, oh, there would be a ruckus over that for sure!
I like the name Mona way better than the word Moon.
ReplyDelete2000 years for the name Moon is sooo long.
ReplyDeleteI think the name Felino is good too. (Originating from the word feline. :) )
