What If the Earth Stopped Spinning?

Back in 1978 in the Superman movie with Christopher Reeve, he becomes SO sad because his friend Lois Lane is killed in a land slide.  Very upset, he decides to reverse the rotation of the Earth and make time go backwards so he can bring her back.  That's pretty cool...and far-fetched, but it creates the question...what would happen to the Earth if it stopped spinning and went a new direction?

Oh?  So we would be flung into extinction?  Interesting....Another question:  What if someone survived?  The Earth isn't spinning anymore, and there isn't any night or day, just a long day for some and a long night for others.  This would last for a whole year! We would want to live near the poles because we know that with our tilt, for 6 months we could have daylight and 6 months we could have night.

Yes, this is crazy, but sometimes it's fun to imagine what if's!

So!  Without spinning the Equator wouldn't bulge anymore, that means all the extra water in the bulge would travel to the poles!  Uh oh!  That's where we wanted to live!

The theory states that after the extra waters went to the poles a whole new land mass would appear at the Equator...

We would have to load up the camels and head to the Equator!  But wait!  If the Earth isn't spinning then our magnetic field wouldn't work anymore.  Remember how the center of the Earth spins with the Earth's rotation?  It wouldn't be spinning anymore and so our protection from solar storms would be finished.

Well, great!  Earth would become a terrible place to live!  My hair gets really damaged in the Sun!

Ummm, luckily this is all hypothetical and just an imaginary thought process.  Thank goodness we have gravity and inertia to keep us spinning because it kind of hurts my brain to think about how we would live on an Earth that isn't spinning.  Maybe I'll go pop a bowl of popcorn and finish watching Superman....

Gee!  He didn't do such a great job either!  I'm going to quit worrying about the Earth and figure out how Lois can breath in outer space!  What would that be like? The question is:
