Importance of Heat Transfer: Conduction, Convection, and Radiation
Understanding heat transfer makes us smarter people, scientists and engineers. We learned and understand that heat transfers from a heat source or point of energy and transfers to a colder area. In winter time we fight to keep warm inside and cold outside, so our homes are insulated to keep warm air in. When summertime is upon us we fight to keep our home cool! We want the cooler air inside and the warmer outside.
Could you solve a heat transfer problem in your home?
What if it is 24 degrees outside and you feel a draft in your room. It's getting colder by the minute and you want to figure out what is going on. When you get to the living room you find out the front door is wide open. Can you keep the warm air in with the front door open? Nope! There is a big breach in the insulation of your home. Once you close the door the breach is fixed and the cold air is blocked from coming in.
Check outside before you shut the door, just in case someone is outside...like a little brother or sister! You would hate to leave them outside in 24 degree weather.
What about this one! Be ready little engineer....What if it is a very hot night in July and your air conditioning broke! Ugh! It's getting hotter and hotter, your sheets are getting wet with sweat. What can you do?
Heat transfers from hot to cold....ask yourself, how do I cool off?
1. Cold shower.
2. Open the window and turn on a fan.
3. Sleep outside.
Ready for one more? You and your family are on a road trip, the car starts to act up and the engine light comes on. The next town is about 12 miles away....should you try and drive the 12 miles to get help?
Better not! Pull over and turn off your motor. Your engine is super hot. Heat transfer goes from hot to cold....conduction will cause your whole engine to burn up! (You'll have to buy a new car!)
Heat transfer can save your life, or be dangerous. That's why we learn about how energy moves around in homes, factories, cars, rockets, all kinds of places and systems. Too much heat is not good and too much cold isn't good either. Being smart about energy can make a world of difference.
